Changing The Game

Changing The Game
28 July 2022

NUM is excited to announce that we have received funding from Trust for London under their Decent Living Standards priority stream for our innovative Changing the Game project.

We are developing new services to support sex workers who are contemplating changes to their sex work involvement and sources of revenue. Some may desire to leave sex industries altogether; others may want to reduce industry working by blending it with mainstream jobs, education or other pursuits.

We believe that sex workers must have the freedom to explore their options in safety and without judgement, and to request the resources and support that they need to make their career goals a reality.  As such, through our Leaving the Game research, we will first hear from sex workers to better understand the barriers that they face in meeting their income and career goals, the obstacles to leaving sex industries and challenges securing mainstream work or education.

Sex workers’ lived experiences and priorities will inform this ‘Changing the Game’ project, which will bring together a working group of ‘exit’ and vocational services, and sex worker-led groups; map their service offerings and identify what resources are available to London-based sex workers as part of their career planning; and develop a digital heat map and offline materials necessary to aid sex workers in contemplation and planning for life changes. The project will compare what sex workers have asked for with what’s available to them, and identify gaps and opportunities for joint advocacy to decision-makers for policy changes and input into how resources are directed.

Ultimately, the Changing the Game project is aimed to do just that: to change the game and centre the priorities of adults in sex industries and to orient investment and services towards what sex workers need in light of the economic crises that our country is facing and the Covid-19 pandemic.
