Happy Anniversary to NUMbrella Lane!

Happy Anniversary to NUMbrella Lane!
31 October 2022

1st November 2022, marks 1 year since NUM took over operating the former project Umbrella Lane from SISU. NUMbrella Lane is building upon the legacy of providing an in-person, community-centred wellbeing space for sex workers in Scotland.

Here are a few highlights from our first year –

Supporting Needs
We expanded our services to provide a food bank, food vouchers and mental health support and referrals

Outreach
We have enhanced our ability to support migrants with the support of an experiential coordinator

Learning More
We have undertaken a needs assessment with sex workers across Scotland to explore how to expand our services in the coming years

Building Capacity
We have hired a Coordinator to run NUMbrella Lane and a drop-in support worker to assist our wellbeing space

Advocacy and Fundraising
We have collaborated with Arika on Truth and Lies, an anthology of sex worker art and writing, culminating in a launch event at the Glasgow Centre for Contemporary Arts (and all proceeds will continue to support NUMbrella Lane’s work!)

Ensuring Longevity
Achieving funding from the National Lottery in Scotland, as well as Glasgow Community and Voluntary Services and The Robertson Trust, ensuring that we can continue our work for three more years!

Wellbeing and Fun
We rounded out year one with outings to the beach and Alpaca Farm!

Here is a letter from Nathália, our NUMbrella Lane Coordinator, to share more of her thoughts.

the text reads: "a letter from nathalia, coordinator for numbrella lane. It's been one year since NUM took over operation of Umbrella Lane, and created NUMbrella Lane. In our first year, we made mistakes, we got it right, we cried, and we laughed. But the main thing was that we learned a lot about the importance of nurturing the sense of community. We have the privilege of being part of something that is bigger than us, in a society where in many ways it can be cold and exclusionary. We will always be holding on, ready to embrace and do what we can to show all our affection and support. Thank you to everyone who supports and believes in our work. The greatest reward we can have is knowing that we have your respect. With much love (always!) nathalia"
All of us at NUM would like to thank the funders and donors who make our work possible and believe in our mission of ending all forms of violence against sex workers through inclusion.

Most of all, we would like to thank the sex workers in Scotland and beyond who have created and nurtured the community of NUMbrella Lane alongside us. We couldn’t do this without your contributions, support and trust.
