Call to Action: Online Safety Bill
7 April 2022
NUM are supporting the campaign run by the English Collective of Prostitutes to oppose clause 16 of the Online Safety Bill, which promises to “crack down on harmful online content”. Clause 16 cites the offence of “inciting or controlling prostitution for gain” as one which is to be tackled using the Bill.
A clause such as this would be devastating for sex workers, causing online platforms to severely restrict and potentially ban altogether the ability for sex workers to advertise online.
Sex workers rely on the internet for safety – to take bookings, to vet clients, and to work independently away from potentially exploitative third parties and managers. We have seen the disastrous consequences that the banning of online platforms can have on sex work through FOSTA/SESTA in the US. Sex workers have faced increased danger, crime, violence, poverty, isolation, vulnerability, suicide, and poorer physical and mental health as a result.
