Amazon Prime releases Murder In The Red Light
20 April 2023
We are pleased to share that NUM is featured in a new documentary on Amazon Prime – Murder In The Red Light. The documentary is produced by Woodcut Media, and includes interview footage with Dr. Raven Bowen, CEO of NUM.
The documentary explores the impact of the murders of five women working as sex workers in Ipswich in 2006 – Tania Nicol, Gemma Adams, Anneli Alderton, Paula Clennell and Annette Nicholls. It considers the impact of stigma, the law and the failures of support from services and the state, and how these create the conditions for sex worker victimisation. It also discusses the media coverage of the case at the time and the harms that this can cause for the victims, the victims’ families and the sex working community.
As Dr. Bowen says during the documentary: “There’s no acknowledgement that these sex workers have been taken from families, from communities. We need to recognise and acknowledge, and mark, and understand why these sex workers were targeted, and why they were killed, and then change the conditions that lead to predation upon this population. That’s our job. We need to do better, and we can do better, and we must do better.“
We would like to express our thanks to Woodcut Media, and to the other contributors in the documentary for sharing their powerful insights.
