Sex Workers’ Experiences of Banking Discrimination

Our report into the discrimination faced by sex workers accessing banking and financial services can be found here!

About the project

Sex worker stigma reaches into every part of sex workers’ lives, including into banking and other financial services. We want to hear about cases of discrimination from banks in the UK and find out about existing policies that exclude sex workers from accessing financial services.

The findings of this research will be used for advocacy with interest organisations and regulators in the financial and banking sector.

We want to understand in what ways banks and other financial institutions discriminate against sex workers and how this form of discrimination affects the lives of sex workers. We also want to look at the policies of individual banks as well as nationwide policy recommendations and laws about access to banking.

Who we are partnering with

This research is led by a sex worker and R&D team member. We are also working closely with the legal team of the United Sex Workers branch of the UVW union to understand what laws and nationwide policies would have to change to support sex workers best.

How you can get involved

Research for the BDSW project has now closed, and our report has been published.

The research process involved sex workers with experience of financial discrimination sharing their experiences through an online survey, followed by in-depth interviews. Sex workers participating in the interviews to share their experiences were compensated for their time and expertise.

If you are a sex worker and would like more information about this project, please contact us at bdsw@nationaluglymugs.org. We’d love to hear from you.
