Victim Support

Criminal justice pathways / Police advocacy:

It is always your decision if you want to engage with the criminal justice system. The casework team can offer tailored support in response to whatever feels right for you to ensure you’re able to make an informed choice about what you want to happen next. Here’s the different ways the casework team can support you:

If you want to make a report to police about the incident, we can support this process by linking with specialist contacts within each police force. We hope to ensure that the response is knowledgeable, sensitive and appropriate, and that your rights as a victim are upheld.

We take a victim-led approach to our engagement with the police. This means individuals are in control of how much involvement they wish to have with the police and other services when reporting to NUM. Our casework team will provide support regardless of their decision.

We trust the ability and autonomy of every sex worker reporting to NUM to choose their own pathway to healing and recovery following an incident.

The casework team are committed to ensuring the police adhere to the code of practice and are held accountable for the ways in which they engage with sex workers. We will advocate with other organisations on behalf of sex workers to ensure they recieve the same level of service as anyone else would.

Sometimes NUM will send out police alerts to members to ensure that the sex work community is warned about dangerous individuals.

We may also assist the police in investigative work regarding harms committed against sex workers.

NUM value the lives of sex workers. We believe that they deserve investment, access to resources and social and legal protections. We will never give the police any information without explicit consent from the individuals concerned.

NUM’s engagement with the police is only to support sex workers and we are not part of any enforcement agency or initiative.
